SPEAKING PAPER

It is of the utmost importance that you read over the exam format again and understand that TIME is STRICT...you must respect the time limits.

So, when you are practicing, you should do so with a stop watch / watch.

You want to speak in complete sentences. Avoid short answers.
If you can't think of anything or you get nervous, you could always say, hmm, that is a good question, let me think...and then respond. MAKE SOMETHING UP if you have to.

Remember that completing the tasks is essential, so be clear on what they are!!

I will be available to practice this Sunday, June 14th, for an hour and a bit, at bar COLOSSEO in Quattromiglia/Rende at 8:00pm.

And again on June 20th by request, same place and time to be determined (I will post it here on the blog soon)...

First of all, THANK YOU Nuccia for keeping the blog alive!!!!
I hope you have all taken a look at the information Nuccia posted as it is very useful!!

Second, CONGRATS for finishing the CLAC examinations.
The written exams went extremely well.
The oral exams went well but I must remind you to remain calm and COMMUNICATE...don't thnk about your errors...don't choose every word...instead SPEAK, smile, and say whatever it is that you have to say in order to answer a question fully...

TIPS
1. Take time to think if you need it but don't allow too much 'dead air'.
2. Be as natural as possible.
3. Use all of the time you have for questions but remember that your pace is essential...if you run out of time and you haven't answered the question, your mark will reflect this.
4. During your partnered activity remember that it is a conversation with your partner, not an interview....and you must use your time wisely.

The marks for CLAC will be posted soon on the CLAC website.

Is anyone up for a coffee BEFORE June 22nd in order to practice speaking??

I suggest June 14th and June 21st as possible practice dates...if you are interested, please post your response in the comments section of this post.

This aside...keep studying and time yourselves on practice exam material.

A LITTLE NOTE...

It was a pleasure to meet you Teachers and Students. You were delightful in class...I found you to be both attentive and challenging, as well as extremely compassionate and kind. I feel that I've gained forty wonderful colleagues and I think it will be strange not to see you every week, although perhaps my grammar nightmares will stop now! ha.

(with the exception of ‘can’t’ = 1 word ‘cannot’) as the full form (e.g.
‘didn’t’ = 2 words ‘did not’; doesn't = 2 words ‘does not’; etc.).

A teacher asked me how to listen to a broadcast of 'This American Life'...

let me try to explain:

-choose a broadcast that is interesting

-below the title (example...on the main page there is a broadcast called 'Mistakes were made') you will see a little volume icon and beside it 'FULL EPISODE', click this and a small window will pop up and immediately the epidsode should start playing.

Gradable adjectives
Many adjectives describe qualities that can be measured in degrees, such as size, beauty, age, etc. These adjectives are often called gradable adjectives, because they can be used in comparative or superlative forms, or with grading adverbs such as very or extremely, to show that a person or thing has more or less of a particular quality. The following are some examples of common gradable adjectives used with grading adverbs:

Don’t talk to Jenny, she’s very angry.
Sorry, I can’t stop, I’m extremely busy.
I’m worried about Tom, he’s dreadfully unhappy.
This is a very important matter.
That slice of cake is rather big.

Non-gradable adjectives
Some adjectives describe qualities that are completely present or completely absent. They do not occur in comparative and superlative forms, and cannot be used with adverbs such as very or extremely, because we don’t usually imagine degrees of more or less of the quality being described. They are referred to as non-gradable adjectives. Non-gradable adjectives do sometimes occur with non-grading adverbs such as completely which emphasize the extent of the quality, e.g.:

The questions were completely impossible.
The food was absolutely superb.
Adjectives which identify something as belonging to a particular type, sometimes referred to as classifying adjectives, are also non-gradable, cf:

a chemical reaction. = an extremely chemical reaction
an indoor pool = a very indoor pool

Gradable and non-gradable
Note that, sometimes, confusion arises because some adjectives have both gradable and non-gradable senses with similar meanings e.g.:

She sounded slightly foreign.
He’s advising on foreign policy.
In the first example, foreign is gradable because it refers to a measurable quality, whereas in the second, foreign is non-gradable because it refers to a particular type (of policy).

Which adverb to use?
As a rule of thumb, the common grading adverbs extremely, very, rather, slightly and a bit, which emphasize degrees of a particular quality, don’t usually occur with non-gradable adjectives, since non-gradable adjectives identify a particular type or an absolute quality. Compare the following examples with non-gradable and gradable adjectives:

This food is extremely superb. This food is extremely tasty.
I found a very Roman coin. I found a very shiny coin.

On the other hand, common non-grading adverbs such as completely, totally and absolutely, which emphasize absolute qualities, do not usually occur with gradable adjectives, since gradable adjectives describe qualities which can be measured in degrees. Compare the following examples with gradable and non-gradable adjectives:

This book is absolutely excellent. This book is absolutely interesting.
The exercise was completely impossible. The exercise was completely difficult.

One further important thing to remember is that the commonly used adverb really, and the adverbs fairly and pretty (an informal variant of fairly) are regularly used with both gradable and non gradable adjectives, e.g.:

By 2014 I'll have got married with my boyfriend and we'll be living in Paris with our first son, Samuel. On his 3rd birthday we'll have been residing in the French capital for one year and I'll be hoping to have another child, maybe a daughter, in the next summer.
If all that isn't going to come true, I think that by the beginning of 2014 'll have left my present boyfriend and found another...
I'm cheating!! I actually don't know how my personal life will be different in 5 years' time, over all I don't want to think of my future because I'm sure it will make me anxious.
There's only one thing I'm quite confident about future: my job will be turning less precarious than today as soon as "The Chevalier" won't take care about Italian politics. ;-)

Please remember that I am teaching two sections of this class:

A Student section
Wednesdays and Thursdays

Mondays and Thursdays

Now, let's talk about ATTENDANCE:

-You must attend YOUR section.

-If you are unable to attend a certain class of your section, you may recuperate the class by attending the same lesson of the other section I teach however, you must communicate this to me ahead of time so that I can note your attendance on the proper 'registro'.

-You must be present for 80% of the course lessons.
-You are permitted a maximum of 4 absences.
-If you pass this number of absences, it may be possible to recuperate at the end of the course with a tutor...but you will have to speak with CLA.
